What is big data? In layman’s terms - big data refers to our ability to collect and analyze the vast amounts of data we are now generating in the world. The ability to harness the ever-expanding amounts of data is completely transforming our ability to understand the world and everything within it. The advances in analyzing big data allow us to do things which were unimaginable decades ago - decode human DNA in minutes, find cures for cancer, accurately predict human behavior, foil terrorist attacks, pinpoint marketing efforts and prevent diseases.
What Big Data reminds me of? It reminds me of a futuristic scary movie ‘the eagle eye’. I watched the movie a while back and thought, darn, this could be the end of human race. You cannot deny the fact that this present day, this moment, there could be someone watching you. Cameras have become as common as a Facebook profile.
What’s my concern with big data? Of course I agree that a lot of good can happen from proper surveillance, but what about privacy and security? Hackers of all kind are everywhere. Hacking cameras shouldn’t be a big deal for them, don’t you think?
I am concerned about our future. Well, as long as it is in the news, we can at least be aware. Thanks to the whistle blowers!!!
And for those who do it, it’s an addiction; just like gambling, they don’t want to stop… (Source: star Malaysia)
